Sumitomo SHI FW and Fortum partner to decarbonize the Częstochowa CHP plant

PRESS RELEASE, March 10, 2025

Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) has signed a contract with Fortum for the decarbonization of the Częstochowa combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Poland as one of the key contractors of the project. The decarbonization project, worth around 100 million euros in total , will begin in the coming weeks.

SFW will modernize the Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler at the Częstochowa plant as a turn-key project for Fortum in 2025-2026, converting the boiler’s fuel mix from 70% coal and 30% biomass to 100% certified renewable biomass.

SFW’s scope includes a comprehensive upgrade of the Częstochowa CFB boiler, featuring a new fuel feeding system, boiler furnace enhancements, and a bottom ash system upgrade. It also involves new flue-gas recirculation, air systems improvement, and flue gas cleaning, while building the needed new and modernizing the existing buildings and managing all necessary permits. Advanced automation, instrumentation, and electrical systems are included to increase the plant’s operational efficiency.

The decarbonization project will reduce the Częstochowa plant’s CO2 emissions radically by 99% compared to the current level. The plant will use 350 000 tons of certified wood biomass annually, sourced from the domestic market in Poland.

Fortum is a long-standing customer of SFW, to which SFW has delivered the CFB boiler during 2008-2010 and an Air Quality Control System (AQCS) extension project in 2020-2022. The companies have had a long-term service agreement since 2014. With this CFB modernization project, SFW continues to support Fortum with the timely implementation of their sustainable development strategy.

This is a significant retrofit contract that involves the complete conversion of the CFB boiler to utilize renewable fuels. At SFW we are extremely appreciative of this agreement, as it gives us the opportunity to realize one of our pioneering coal to 100% renewable fuels projects in the Central European market, while supporting the strategy of our valued customer. As the original equipment manufacturer of the CFB boiler, we are excited to take it to another level in terms of decabonization. Together with Fortum and other key contractors, we will ensure a clean and reliable source of heat for the city of Częstochowa for years to come

SFW received the Final Notice to Proceed (FNTP) in November 2024. The anticipated start of commercial operations at the plant is in November 2026. The decarbonization project will be completed by 2027.
