PRESS RELEASE, 10 July 2024, 12:00
Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) and Siemens Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) solutions for the global market.
SFW and Siemens Energy will work together to advance the development, cooperation, sales, and services regarding LAES, a technology that stores energy using a freely available and clean resource – air. Siemens Energy will particularly contribute profound technical and commercial know-how in turbines, generators and compressors to jointly create a comprehensive, efficient solution for the operation and maintenance of LAES plants.
The MoU outlines the framework for possible future detailed agreements concerning the supply of Siemens Energy equipment for LAES projects developed by SFW. It involves the establishment of a joint taskforce, comprising experts from both companies. The taskforce will explore the scope of potential LAES projects.
SFW is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI), a leading investor and technology partner of Highview Power (HP) since 2020. SHI’s commercial demonstration plant based on HP’s LAES (liquid air energy storage) technology at Hiroshima Gas’ Hatsukaichi plant in Japan will come online in May 2025. In June 2024, HP has started UK’s first commercial-scale LAES project with an output of 50 MW for 6-hour duration in Carrington, UK.
