Espoo, Finland, 10 May, 2023 — SFW will supply a biomass CFB boiler to Solvay’s soda and sodium bicarbonate production plant in Rheinberg, Germany.
The new boiler will use locally sourced recycled wood chips as fuel to generate low-carbon power and steam used in the production processes at the Rheinberg Solvay plant. The boiler will replace a coal-fired boiler and lower Solvay’s annual CO2 emissions by 295.000 tonnes per year and also have a positive impact on emissions of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.
The “Woodpower 2” investment will finalize the coal face out of the site for Energy production and is an important step in realization of Solvay's One Planet strategy, aiming to decarbonize the company’s operations and phase out thermal coal altogether by 2025.
- “Based on many years of trustful cooperation, we are certain that this project with demanding steam parameters (520°C, 111 bar) will also be successfully implemented in the existing plant structure at the Rheinberg site”, says Norbert Mülders, Plant Manager at the Rheinberg site of Solvay.
- “We are very pleased that our long-standing relationship with Solvay has reached another milestone. Our CFB biomass boilers satisfy our clients' reliability, environmental, and efficiency goals with innovative technology for converting biomass fuels into valuable steam and power”, says Jaakko Riiali, Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, SFW.
The boiler plant is planned to be in commercial operation by the end of 2024.
