The Oxy+ process operates in an oxygen-rich environment, which improves combustion efficiency and reduces emissions. Here’s how the process works:

Step 1: Introduction of Pure Oxygen

The process starts by replacing combustion air with oxygen in the process while maintaining the design and structure of the boiler. This oxygen-rich environment enhances combustion efficiency and allows for the effective use of carbon-neutral fuels, such as biomass and waste residues.

Step 2: Recirculation and CO2 Capture

The performance of the energy generation plant is maintained by the partial recirculation of the product CO2 stream. This enables the efficient control of the temperature and chemical reactions taking place in the boiler and producing an already enriched CO2 stream for further processing without the need for a dedicated capture plant.

Step 3: Enhancing Plant Performance

The SFW Oxy+ system integrates carbon capture seamlessly. In some cases, it improves energy generation efficiency and overall plant performance. By reducing both energy consumption and the footprint needed for carbon capture, it ensures operations remain efficient.

Versatile Integration

The technology is highly adaptable, suitable for small-scale decentralized heating systems, industrial boilers, and large-scale utility power plants. It can be applied to existing plants as a retrofit or implemented in new iFnstallations, offering flexibility across various energy projects.

Sumitomo SHI FW’s Oxy+ technology has been rigorously tested and validated at a 30 MWth scale plant in Compostilla, Spain, as well as in several smaller pilot plants across Europe and globally. Built on SFW designs, this technology has successfully operated for thousands of hours, showcasing its reliability and efficiency in real-world conditions.
