Unlock energy from challenging fuels
In the drive toward net-zero emissions, energy producers play a critical role. Sumitomo SHI FW’s Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) boilers are designed to maximize resource utilization by recovering energy from difficult fuels, including residual biomass and industrial waste.
With 99% reliability, low emissions, and high operational flexibility, BFB technology provides a powerful, sustainable solution for handling high-moisture and high-ash fuels. Discover how BFB boilers can create energy while benefiting both the operations and the environment.
Tabs
Our BFB boilers utilize advanced fluidization technology to optimize combustion and energy extraction from various fuel types. Here’s how the process works:
Step 1: Preparation
Biomass – like wood chips, bark, and agricultural residues – and industrial wastes are first processed to a suitable size and then fed into the boiler.
Step 2: Fluidization
Air is injected beneath the combustion chamber, flowing upward through a bed of particles. This airflow suspends the particles, creating a bubbling effect that evenly distributes heat and thoroughly mixes the fuel within the bed.
Step 3: Combustion
As fuel enters the fluidized bed, it mixes with the hot particles, promoting efficient and complete combustion. The bubbling bed keeps temperatures relatively low, which helps reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
Step 4: Heat Recovery
The heat generated by combustion is transferred to tubes filled with water around the combustion chamber, producing steam. This steam can be used to generate electricity, support industrial processes, or provide district heating.
These boilers operate at advanced steam parameters, reaching up to 540°C and 145 bar for optimal energy generation. The design also minimizes auxiliary power needs, keeping operational costs manageable.
Environmental Compliance
Our BFB boilers achieve low NOx and dioxin emissions through precise control of combustion. Each unit is tailored to meet stringent environmental standards, ensuring compliance and often exceeding regulatory demands.
Decades of Expertise and Proven Performance
With more than 40 years of expertise in fluidized bed technology, Sumitomo SHI FW is a global leader in high-performance, reliable BFB boilers. Our technology has been deployed in over 700 units worldwide, amassing over 54 million hours of operational experience. This extensive track record ensures dependable performance, even with diverse fuels and under demanding conditions.
Fuel Flexibility
In today’s unpredictable market, the ability to use multiple fuel sources is essential. BFB technology allows energy producers to harness even the most challenging fuel mixes, like forest residues, sludge, and refuse-derived fuels.
Operational Adaptability
Designed for versatility, BFB boilers adjust quickly to steam demand changes, making them a good fit for district heating and industrial use cases. The ability to use local fuel cuts down on transport costs, enhancing both efficiency and savings.
High Efficiency and Low Maintenance
With steam parameters reaching up to 540°C and 145 bar, BFB boilers maintain high efficiency while requiring less auxiliary power. This efficiency translates to lower operating costs and reduced maintenance, making them a cost-effective solution for the long term.
Outstanding Environmental Performance
Reducing emissions is at the core of BFB technology. Optimized combustion and multi-level air injection keep NOx and dioxin levels low. Each boiler is designed to further cut CO emissions and unburned carbon, helping plants meet strict environmental standards and lessen their ecological impact.
