Driving the transition to cleaner fuels for a Net Zero future
As industries face increasing pressure to cut carbon emissions, the need for alternative fuel sources has become urgent. Our sustainable fuel solutions help industries transition away from carbon-intensive fuels and meet decarbonization policy commitments and regulations. Explore how our sustainable fuel technologies can support your journey to net zero.
The importance of cost-effective emission reduction in transportation
Industries worldwide, particularly the transportation industry, are among the largest contributors to carbon emissions. Road, shipping, and aviation sectors together produce gigatons of CO₂ annually. Companies in these sectors face increasing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Sustainable fuel alternatives with advanced gasification technology
Sumitomo SHI FW’s Oxy-steam Fluidized Bed Gasification technology converts biomass and waste into a hydrogen and carbon monoxide rich syngas for renewable fuels production. The high-value syngas is suitable for synthesis technologies to produce biomethanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) for shipping and aviation.

Scalable solutions
Systems are specifically designed to the feedstock and requirements of the project and can be integrated into existing infrastructure, providing a financially viable alternative to fossil fuels. We also provide heat integration and recovery to ensure overall efficiency and lowest costs of operation. We typically offer up to 200 MWf for biomass gasification and 150 MWf for waste derived fuels.
Feedstock versatility
SFW Oxy-Steam Gasification technology uses a range of feedstocks, from forestry residues, wood pellet, to agricultural residues and waste-derived fuels from municipal, commercial or industrial waste. The technology is flexible in its operational parameters to be able to meet varying feedstock characteristics. We also enable the possibility of using more than one feedstock to assist in securing long term supplies from multiple sources.
Why partner with Sumitomo SHI FW?
Building upon its world respected position for CFB technology for the paper, pulp and power industries, Sumitomo SHI FW can provide such systems for gasification with unparalleled experience in the thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste derived feedstocks to syngas. Gasification references have been built and operated since the 1980s, including commercial, demonstration and pilot facilities.
Sumitomo SHI FW leads the development of commercially viable, eco-friendly fuel alternatives. Through our involvement in EU projects such as Flex SNG and BioSFerA, focused on sustainable aviation and marine fuels, and partnerships with leading producers of sustainable fuels and renewable feedstock solutions, we are advancing commercial-scale bio-residue to syngas systems that turn sustainable fuels into reality.
